If you have never seen a psychologist before, it is often difficult to
know what to expect. For therapy patients, in the first one to two
office visits, a clinical interview is conducted. During this interview,
the psychologist asks many questions regarding the patient's history
and current symptoms, and the patient usually completes a few brief
questionnaires. A treatment plan is then formulated by the
psychologist and discussed with the patient, and treatment sessions
begin.
Dr. Loftin is a cognitive-behavioral psychologist. This means that he
uses research-based treatment techniques during psychotherapy to
help patients. Cognitive therapy focuses on recognizing and changing
thoughts that cause negative feelings and problematic situations.
Behavior therapy generally involves understanding the learning
processes that lead people to engage in unhelpful behaviors and
making changes to the environment to improve symptoms.
When working with couples, Dr. Loftin uses techniques from multiple
treatment approaches. These include behavior therapy (PREP),
integrated couples therapy, and emotion-focused therapy.
Services
Psychotherapy with Dr. Loftin is typically relaxed and friendly.
Sessions are usually structured. Assignments for patients to
complete at home are considered very important to building new skills
and applying ideas discussed in session to daily life. The goal of
therapy for all patients is to develop new skills and ways of coping
with situations that will help to prevent symptoms from occurring
again later.
Psychological assessment is different from psychotherapy.
Assessments are often conducted to establish an estimate of a
person's IQ, to determine if there are aspects of one's personality
affecting mental health, to learn if someone is disabled by mental
health problems, or for many other reasons. Assessments usually
consist of a detailed clinical interview and lengthy questionnaires or
psychological tests.
If you believe that you or a family member may be experiencing a
psychological problem, call to talk with Dr. Loftin about possible
screening, treatment, or even a referral to another mental health
professional.
Not all psychologists are odd people. It is not necessary to suffer
from psychological pain when help is available. Call to give it a try.
